If you observe, in 2014 and 2013, UPSC asked questions on completely different topics. Further, there was no question from 2015-2020, a single question exactly on the topic in 2021, and again a no-show in 2022.

So now, after analyzing the PYQs, the understanding we get is: the topic is not so important from the Mains perspective, (doesn’t mean that it should be skipped altogether). And thus, should be given less priority than other important topics. Also, from now onwards probably they’ll stick to the topic. Since 2013 was the first year with the new Mains exam pattern and probably the put the question from the old syllabus.

Now, while the official syllabus only mentions Indian Geography in brackets, as if it’s not so important, the most number of questions have been asked on this topic in UPSC Mains. Also compare this with the common understanding of GS 1, where people think that Physical Geography is most important when it comes to Geography in GS 1.

Thus, reading the previous year questions from each subject and topic is very important to understand the actual syllabus of UPSC Mains.
