The 2018 North Korea(DPRK)–United States Singapore Summit, commonly known as the Singapore Summit, was a summit meeting between North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump. It was the first-ever meeting between leaders of North Korea and the United States.
The brief joint statement has highlighted the following salient points: both Trump and Kim exchanged in-depth opinions for establishing US-DPRK relations and also for building a robust peace regime on the Korean peninsula. Secondly, Trump has committed to providing a security guarantee to the DPRK. And lastly, Kim has committed to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
Immediately following the summit, President Trump announced that the U.S. military would discontinue “provocative” joint military exercises with South Korea, and stated that he wished to bring the U.S. soldiers back home at some point, but he reinforced that it was not part of the Singapore equation.
Unfortunately, the joint statement does not refer to “complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation”, a goal Trump has always promised to accomplish. And with a change in regime in the United States, the engagement with North Korea is likely to reduce and the issue seems to have been kept aside for the time being. [200 words]
